Accessibility rules for videos and podcasts

Accessibility requirements for adding video and audio content online.

Existing video and podcast content must be made Level A compliant.

Any new video and podcast content must be Level AA compliant.

Existing videos and audio clips (Level A)

As a minimum, for existing video and audio content to be migrated onto the Single Digital Presence CMS, it will require a transcript.

Transcript

The transcript should include:

  • Title
  • Producer of content
  • Text transcript in HTML format
  • Identify the name of the speaker
  • Ensure all speech content is included
  • Include relevant non-speech audio
  • Include any textual or graphical information shown in the video

New videos and audio clips (Level AA)

Videos and podcasts

When hiring videographers, please include the following requirements within briefs or requests for quotes.

Transcript

The transcript should include:

  • Title
  • Producer of content
  • Text transcript in HTML format
  • Identify the name of the speaker
  • Ensure all speech content is included
  • Include relevant non-speech audio
  • Include any textual or graphical information shown in the video

Closed captions on videos

  • A text representation of the sounds on a video timed with the action on screen.
  • Large font size is used
  • High-contrast colours
  • Remains on-screen long enough to be read
  • Can be turned on and off by the user
  • Have no periods without captions
  • Attribute speech to a particular speaker

Specifications

If you're having your videos hosted on the DPC Youtube account:

  • video file: H264 or MP4
  • caption file: SRT files 
  • thumbnail (optional):
    • you can select a preferred screenshot image for each video and save as a JPG (max file size 1MB)
    • you can pick the timecode from the video and let us know and we can select it in the Youtube backend
