Create news content

How and when to use the news content template in the content management system.

This guide is designed to help you create:

  • news content pages (using the CMS news content template)
  • a news landing page.

News stories should only remain published for no longer than 2 months. After 2 months, news story sessions drop as the story is no longer relevant or current, and the page should be archived.

News pages need to include the following:

  • header information
  • featured image
  • news content and author
  • sidebar information

Create a news page

  • To create a news page using our content template, click Content > Add content > News.

  • Title*

News item title. Keep to 70 characters (for example, Australia Day long weekend road safety blitz).

    Summary*

Include the lead of the news story. The lead is one sentence long and summarises the facts of the news story.

    Introduction text

A short summary of the story in one sentence.

  • Resize the image for your story to 818px wide x 496px high (keep this dimension proportion).

    • Click Select images.
    • Browse and select your image from the Library tab if uploading an existing image.
    • If you're uploading an image for the first time, click on Add image, then Choose file and browse your computer for your image.
    • Complete the Name field. Make the name of the file meaningful to the image, so it can be easily found using Media search. For example, a photo of a teenage girl laughing should be titled 'Teenage-girl-laughing'. If it’s a photo of a well-known person, you should include their name and position in the title (e.g. Joan-Kirner-former-Premier-of-Victoria).
    • Complete the Alternative text field for your image. This is a description of the image for users who can’t see the image; it’s an important accessibility requirement. If the image is simply decorative, add 2 double quotes in the alt text field; this tells the screen reader to skip it.
    • Click Save image.
  • Date*

Date the story was first published.

    Body

Add the body of your news story. Order your paragraphs from most newsworthy to least newsworthy.

    Location

You can tag your news story with a region of Melbourne or Victoria:

    • Eastern metropolitan Melbourne
    • Northern metropolitan Melbourne
    • Southeastern metropolitan Melbourne
    • Southern metropolitan Melbourne
    • Western metropolitan Melbourne
    • Eastern Victoria
    • Northern Victoria
    • Western Victoria

This field is not mandatory and can be left blank.

    Department

    Owner of the news story:

    • Department of Education and Training
    • Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning
    • Department of Health and Human Services
    • Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions
    • Department of Justice and Community Safety
    • Department of Premier and Cabinet
    • Department of Transport
    • Department of Treasury and Finance

This field is not mandatory and can be left blank.

  • Add up to 3 related news stories that may also be of interest to your users.

    Internal link

If you're linking to a page that's on the Single Digital Presence CMS, start typing the title of your page to create an internal link.

    External link

If you're linking to an external page, you need to include the full url, https://www

    Contact

Read the Adding a contact block guide.

    Social sharing

This allows users to share the page on social media. It defaults to 'On,' but can be turned off. We recommend keeping it on.

    Topic

Select 1 topic most relevant to your news story. This is important so your new story shows in the news search filters.

    • Arts, culture and heritage
    • Business
    • Communities
    • Education
    • Environment
    • Equality
    • Health
    • Housing
    • Jobs
    • Justice
    • Science and technology
    • Sport and recreation
    • Transport

    Department*

Same as the 'Department' field above. So, the owner of the news story:

    • Department of Education and Training
    • Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning
    • Department of Health and Human Services
    • Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions
    • Department of Justice and Community Safety
    • Department of Premier and Cabinet
    • Department of Transport
    • Department of Treasury and Finance

    This field is mandatory.

    Sites

This is the site it the news item is published on. You will only see the sites applicable to your profile.

  • Once you're happy with your content, you can push it:

    • from Draft
    • to Needs Review.

You can also add comments to the Publishing instructions and comments field to flag any big changes or include notes about approvals. Any notes or comments will be saved into the Revisions tab.

All content will be published within 24 hours. State in the comment field if your content is embargoed or time critical.

Submit a page from Draft to Needs Review

The page will be submitted to the publishing queue where it will be reviewed against the publishing checklist.

We will publish your page if it meets publishing best practice. Alternatively, we will notify you if further changes are required before the page is published.
