Home page components - Vic Gov digital guide

Instructions on using content components created for use on the home page including promotions, key dates, news and events cards.

Here are the component types you can choose from for use on the home page (in addition to basic text, accordion and call to action - see Body content components):

  • Card event - promote Vic Gov events or events we support
  • Promotion - link to programs or services we support but don’t own
  • Card promotion automated - link to programs or services we own (internal link)
  • Key dates - highlight key dates for a topic area/website section
  • Embedded webform - allows users to submit an enquiry or provide feedback
  • Card event - allows you to feature an Event on your page 

Note: automated = internal link.

Technically you can copy in an link into the non-automated cards, but we don't recommend it. If there is any change in the page title or if the page is deleted, your link will break. Using automated links for pages in helps keep the site up to date.

Card event (and Card promotion automated)

These are only used on the homepage.

This card is used to promote events that we’re running, or that we support (for example, the Digital Innovation Festival, or an Australia Day event). 

Events need to be manually populated until the CMS events functionality is available. Future state: card event will be more automated to link to internal event pages.

Card events link to an external event page (e.g. Eventbrite)

Card promotion automated will link to an internal page.

The CTA allows you to add an internal or external URL for more information or bookings.

Create a Card event/Card promotion automated

Complete the following fields:

  • Title*
  • Media
  • Date
  • Location
  • Summary
  • CTA URL - internal or external web page link
  • Topic

Card promotion

The Promotion card is used to highlight programs that we support but don’t own.

Use this card to take users to an external web page.

How to - Card promotion example

Create a Promotion

complete the following fields:

  • Title*
  • Date posted
  • Topic
  • Image
  • Summary
  • CTA URL - internal or external web page link
  • CTA link text - a call to action (eg Find all grants or Make a booking)
  • Topic

Key dates

These are only used on the home page.

The Key dates card looks like this:

How to - Key dates example

Functionality for the Key dates card is being developed. Currently, only the links in the final CTA section works, linking to an external event page.

Create a Key dates card

Complete these fields for each key date:

  • Key Dates*
  • Title*
  • Summary*
  • URL*
  • CTA link - this will display as a button in the key dates feature*

Embedded webform

The site currently has 2 live webforms. 

Email the Digital team if you'd like to develop a new online form.

Card Event Automated

Use the Card Event Automated to feature an event across one or more web pages. As a first step, you need to create an Event content page.

Select Card Event Automated from the Component list:

You'll need to add:

  • call to action text - usually no longer than 3 or 4 words
  • a referred event content link - which will automatically populate with the URL node, once you begin typing the title of the page
