Building from Strength: 10-Year Industry Plan for Family Violence Prevention and Response was launched in 2016 to lay the foundations for building a supported, valued, skilled and diverse workforce. Five years on, we reflect on key actions and achievements so far.

Priority Area 6 in Strengthening the Foundations, the First Rolling Action Plan 2019-22 under Building from Strength ensures that sectors are capable in planning, resourcing, delivering and committing to change and  reform. Embedding robust governance, policies, processes and support systems in organisations and sectors ensures the long-term success and sustainability of the actions committed to in Building from Strength.

Key project updates

YSAS Youth AOD Family Violence Capability Building

This project acquits Action 6.4: Deepen family violence capability in the youth alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector, to support the complex needs of young people accessing youth AOD services, by building family violence capability through staff training, support and supervision, and support for organisational change.

The Family Violence Capability Building Project aims to embed family violence response and prevention capabilities to build workforce and organisational capability to work with young people using alcohol and other drugs (AOD) experiencing family violence.

At the heart of the Project is a cultural shift to equip YSAS workers with family violence capability to enable opportunities to expand AOD work with young people to include early intervention, primary prevention and diversionary work from a frame of gender equality and violence prevention. 

YSAS proposes to use a mix of approaches to create cultural change: 

  • Training, including accredited MARAM training, and knowledge resources for workers.
  • Senior leadership across YSAS sites to be champions for change.
  • ‘First Wave Practitioners’ established to mentor, coach and encourage workforce members to take up training and embed family violence prevention and response skills and capabilities.

This work is being undertaken by the Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS), which was funded $158,030 in February 2020 the project.

This project is due for completion in 2021.
